StraighterLine Credit by Exam is for students who want to save time and money by testing out of introductory-level prerequisite or elective courses. UMGC accepts course credit for successful completion of StraighterLine Credit by Exam tests, so you may quickly become one step closer to your degree.

The exams are 100% online, so they can be taken from anywhere, at any time. From the day you enroll, you have 30 days to schedule and take the remote, proctored exam. It’s only $89 per exam, which includes no-cost study materials. No membership is needed, and there are no hidden fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to complete a StraighterLine Credit by Exam course?

From the day you enroll, you have 30 days to schedule and take the remote, proctored exam. The exam itself, on average, takes 1 hour to complete, with a 2-hour time limit. However, we encourage you to spend time preparing for the exam by taking advantage of the no-cost study materials provided with enrollment. Review the lessons, take the practice quizzes/tests, and use the provided readings, which are all designed to help you pass the exam. 

To ensure academic integrity, the exam is proctored. You can schedule your exam at any time during the 30-day enrollment period. Proctoring is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please note, you should schedule your proctored StraighterLine Credit by Exam at least 72 hours in advance of your desired exam day. Expedited scheduling is also available for an additional fee.

What is a proctored exam?

A proctored exam is an exam that’s supervised by an approved, neutral person (a proctor) who confirms the identity of the test taker and the integrity of the test-taking environment. StraighterLine partners with ProctorU for this purpose. Proctored exams are taken at the student's preferred location and are 100% online, so require a webcam.

I've passed my StraighterLine Credit by Exam test, now what do I do?

Congratulations! Once you have successfully completed a StraighterLine Credit by Exam, you can apply to UMGC and submit your StraighterLine Credit by Exam credits toward the equivalent UMGC course that counts for part of the degree program you want to pursue.

What happens if I don’t pass the exam the first time?

You are welcome to re-purchase the Credit by Exam to take the test one more time. You are allowed two opportunities for each StraighterLine Credit by Exam test. The cost to re-purchase and retake the exam is $89.

How many StraighterLine Credit by Exam courses may I take?

We offer three StraighterLine Credit by Exam courses for UMGC. You are welcome to take all three, giving you the potential to earn up to 9 college credits. Upon successful completion of each exam, you will be eligible for 3 transferable credits to UMGC.

Can StraighterLine Credit by Exam courses be used at other schools?

We can only guarantee the transferability of these particular StraighterLine Credit by Exam courses to UMGC.

Do I need a StraighterLine membership to purchase a Credit by Exam?

No, the $99/month StraighterLine membership will be discounted to $0 during the checkout process.

Can I use a promo code or additional discount offer when purchasing a StraighterLine Credit by Exam?

No, promo codes or additional discount offers do not apply to the purchase of StraighterLine Credit by Exam courses.
